Sound damping is the restraint of vibratory motion which dissipates energy transfer. To illustrate the mechanics of damping, consider a simple swing set. Unless a child seated in his swing keeps pumping and pushing, the back-and-forth motion of the swing will slowly come to a stop. This is a result of the air's friction opposing the motion and removing energy from the system. This process of destroying energy is called damping.
