Tips for Soundproofing Your Windows
Remember that standard windows are typically not "acoustical" windows designed to block sound. An acoustical window is typically made of 3 panes of glass, with each pane carrying a different thickness of glass. By varying the glass thickness, each pane of glass will resonate at a different frequency and attack a different sound wave band. In between these panes of glass, an invisible argon gas is inserted between the panes to help boost the window's ability to combat sound bleed.
In addition to these components of a soundproof window, the gasketing around the perimeter of the window is properly sealed to combat the bleed of noise around the window's perimeter. Standard windows will not carry the features recognized here, and will bleed more noise.
As an alternative to installing the higher cost of a soundproof window, you could opt to suspend a set of Window Plugs infront of your window if you seek portable, temporary protection against sound bleed. Whether you're a home musician seeking temporary protection for unhappy neighbors, or simply need a better night's sleep and protection from street traffic noise, the Window Plugs might be a more appropriate soundproofing treatment for you.
