New Walls + Green Glue

Green Glue is a visco-elastic material that is applied as a constrained layer between two sheets of drywall to dampen sound vibration.   In sound isolation applications, damping has one broad effect - it works to eliminate stored energy. This broad effect can be broken down into two basic effects that describe all of the benefits a product like Green Glue can supply. The first of these is the reduction of resonance problems. The second of these is the dissipation of vibration (sound) as it travels through a structure.

Double Drywall

Green Glue is applied with a caulking gun between two layers of drywall.    As a constrained layer between the two surfaces, it is able to capture and destroy the transmitting sound energy.     With your new build scenario, Green Glue can eliminate your need to disconnect your framing structure, although we still recommend you trigger the disconnection by stagger studding your wall assembly.     You will need to hang a double layer of drywall in order for this treatment to work.   Your assembly sequence is illustrated here:

Density Still Advised

The damping effect triggered by a Green Glue application will still lack the density of the dB-Bloc.     We recommend that you layer your mass loaded vinyl membrane straight to your studs prior to your double drywall treatment.    The combined effect of lining your wall with weight, and then damping the common surface will deliver your strongest, most favorable transmission loss values.    This sequence is listed here:

Remember that your primary goal is to disconnect your common structure and line it with density.    This will protect against the transmission of sound by impairing your common wall's ability to resonate.    Green Glue is a material that can in and of itself trigger this value if you're willing to hang a double layer of drywall.    For maximum, luxury grade STC values, we recommend you combine the treatments by building a disconnected frame, stapling dB-Bloc, and then applying your Green Glue treatment.
