Soundproofing Apartments, Townhomes, Condos

Sound Control Challenge:

Common walls and ceilings that separate residences within a multi dwelling unit share structure.   As we outline in our Academy, sound waves travel faster through this common structure than they do through air.   Common contact points between livings quarters will transmit noise back and forth.   Our goal is to protect one neighbor's noise from the next from passing through thin walls or common floor/ceiling assemblies.

Soundproofing a Multi-Dwelling Facility

Soundproofing Treatment:

First, note that if you are a renter, we probably can't help you with your apartment noise.   The treatments that are required are permanent and require structural changes to your facility.    Even with landlord or owner approval, your investment is something that you will not be able to take with you, and the value you are adding to the living quarters will be passed on to someone else.

If, however, you own your facility, or have your landlord's blessing and are willing to commit the funds, the following treatment options are available to you for your sound protection.   They are designed to protect both you and your neighbor from one another's noise.   The products for these treatments are listed here in the Product Bin.

Ceilings

Acoustic Result:

By lining common surfaces with dB-Bloc and framing the surfaces out for maximum disconnection, the sound waves will be held to one side or collapse within the structure.   Depending on your leakage, this residential soundproofing treatment can trigger an STC value of over 60, knocking out an average 10-12 decibels of sound that would otherwise transmit through.   Our Sound Chamber simulates what this difference might sound like when soundproofing an apartment, townhome or condominium.
